Do you see anything wrong here?

It turns out that the issues I was having with my laptop (which I didn't blog about, but did post on FB about) were all because of my battery. This isn't the first time this has happened. Several months ago, I noticed that I couldn't click on my mouse button. I thought something was stuck under it and I took the battery out to look things over. Well, turns out I could click just fine with the battery out. I wasn't sure why at first, but soon my battery started to swell and I knew that was the issue. I took it in to Apple and they gave me a new battery. Thing is, my husband took over that new battery. So, his battery that was now my battery has started causing me issues.

It started out that my laptop would get down to about 25% power and would just shut down with no warning. This happened in the past and I had to have my logic board replaced. I thought the same thing was happening and backed up all my things just in case. I now know this was a battery issue because when I took the newer battery away from my husband it stopped shutting down and gave me the typical warning around 10%. Well, then I couldn't click on my mouse and I took my battery out to inspect it. Sure enough, it was beginning to swell. Well, it was so bad that I left it out because I couldn't even use my laptop with it in. So, when I pulled it out of the drawer to look at something today, above is what I found!

Now, I am not the first to have this issue. The last time I called in to Apple about it, they gave me a hard time, saying that the battery had a high cycle count and needed to be replaced. I get that the battery is a consumable product and wears out, needing to be replaced. But, honestly, is it normal for them to swell up and bust open?? I think not!

That nagging feeling....

I'm sick. I've been sick since last Thursday. It started as a stomach virus (that Logan and hubby had the week before) and then it just became something else. I don't know what, but I've been hacking and coughing and running a low grade temp. I went to the doctor yesterday and they didn't tell me what I had, but did give me some antibiotics that I could fill if I'm not feeling better soon. The good news is that today I started feeling better. The worst is the coughing at night. The doc prescribed some cough syrup with codeine, so I went to CVS to fill that prescription last night.

Typically, it only takes 10-15 minutes. Last night when I dropped it off, they told me it would be about an hour....CVS was packed! I decided to go the grocery store and come back. I got what I needed and browsed around and then headed back to CVS. It is only about a block from the grocery store. I was waiting at a red light, but was several cars back and I noticed a guy on a bicycle on the sidewalk. He was zooming along. It had been raining and he seemed to be enjoying hitting the puddles and making them splash. Truth be told, he was making me nervous. The light turned green and we all took off and I was still watching the guy on the bike.

He never once slowed down as he crossed driveways into the shopping center. Now, I saw this guy, but I didn't know if everyone else saw him and if a car turned in he would not have been able to stop in time. So, I'm watching nervously. He started to approach the intersection and I was trying to figure out if he was going to be going straight or turning right. Just as he approached the intersection, a pickup ahead of me (there was a car in between us) turned right. I thought the guy in the bike was going to turn right, too, and was relieved. I had visions of him going straight and the truck turning right and the guy getting hit. The right turn is more of a merge, so you don't have to stop all the way and can take the turn at a decent speed, which the pickup did.

Just as I thought all was okay, the guy on the bike slid off the sidewalk and actually hit the back end of the pickup (which I didn't know until later). This caused his bike to fly in the air and he went with it. The car in front of me went straight, so I was the next car turning right behind the pickup. The guy flew in the air and landed in the middle of the road. Now, I had been watching and worrying this whole time so I was already slowing down. If the car in front of me had turned right, I have no doubt the guy would have been ran over.

When he fell in the road, he was facing away from me. All he knew was that he was in the middle of the road and there were headlights coming towards him. The look on his face told me that he thought he was about to get ran over. He slowly got up, picked his bike up and sat it on the sidewalk. I rolled my window down and asked if he was okay. He didn't speak much English, but did say he was okay. I went on to CVS to get my medicine, but that nagging feeling wouldn't stop. What if he wasn't really okay? I picked up my medicine and drove back towards the intersection. There is a Taco Bell on the corner and I could see him sitting on the curb there. His bike was in the same spot he left it when he removed it from the road.

I had to pass it and make a u-turn to get back to it to make sure he was okay. Seeing him still sitting, I knew he was hurt. By the time I made it back, there was a couple in car there talking to him. They were a few cars behind me and saw part of what happened. They didn't know he fell out into the roadway. I got his bike and brought it over to him and the front tire was mangled up. The couple told me that they called an ambulance, but didn't think the guy on the bike understood. Once they came, that is when I found out he hit the back of the pickup. The guy didn't want to go to the hospital and kept trying to say he was okay, but he was limping and bleeding. I didn't stick around to find out what happened, but I just couldn't keep going without making sure he was alright. I think he was in a bit of shock. He just kept looking at me with tears in his eyes and saying, "My breakas, my breakas" and then letting water run between his fingers to tell me that his brakes didn't work because of the rain....he just slid when he tried to stop. I was really shaken up by it, and I'm sure he was as well. I'm sure he won't be riding a bike anytime soon, but I hope he learned to be much more careful and observant of the cars around him.

Lately...

Lately, there is something that has been really bothering me. While waiting at red lights, I notice the pile up of cigarette butts along the curb. It is NASTY! So, lately, it has really been irritating me when I see someone carelessly flick their butt out their window. Why do that? The strange thing is these same people would likely not throw a piece of trash out of their window, because that is littering.

Image courtesy of Bob_2006 on flickr.

Lately, I've been very tempted to run up to someone that I see flick their butt on the ground and tell them that they dropped something, while offering their butt back to them. Do you think they would be amused? Seriously, I don't know why, but it is really bothering me and I'm almost to that point. Matter of fact, while stopped at red lights lately, I've hoped that someone would be right next to me when they do it so that I can casually roll my window down and kindly inform them that they dropped something. I've just about got the nerve up to do it.

I even found a website: SeeNoButts.com. It's purpose is to educate that the Earth is not an ash tray! One would think that is common sense, but no. The butts are more than an eyesore, too.

I'm pretty certain the saying is "the world is your oyster", not the world is your ashtray! I think I might just get a bumper sticker that says that and I'm not even the bumper sticker type! Maybe I will even make up some "No butt littering signs" and place them at nearby intersections. Heck! Maybe I should plant myself a Buttanical Garden! It is just something that I've been thinking about lately.

So Delicious........

The other night we were picking up a few things at my new favorite grocery store and I saw something I wanted to try.

I almost didn't get it. I mean, $2.09 for 6 ounces of yogurt.....CRAZY! I decided to splurge, though. Oh my, it really is so delicious!!

Chondromalacia Patella

I did end up going to a specialist for my knee and he told me I most likely have chondromalacia patella. He also told me that the fact that I have a 3 level house is most likely why I am still having issues with my knee and to make each trip up or down the stairs count. The best part.....he suspects it will be at LEAST another month or two until my knee is feeling better. I am at least happy to hear that it is nothing major.

That is, if I can keep from hurting it more. I was squating down to take a picture on July 4th and lost my balance and fell forward onto my knee. Granted, I was low to the ground and the impact wasn't as bad as my fall in June, but it hurt sooooo bad!!

Since I went to a specialist, I was given my x-rays on cd, so thought I would share it. It is a normal knee x-ray, so nothing really to look at, but the boys were with me and Logan loved getting to see "pictures of my bones"!

OUCH!!

I went to get a few groceries and hubby stayed home with the boys. When I got home, Logan said something about Lucas doing something bad while I was gone. My husband brought me my blood sugar monitor and told me that Lucas got into it while I was gone. I made the mistake of giving him an empty test strip vial and I guess he wanted another one. Anyway, hubby told me that he had to toss several of the test strips because they were folded in half.

I didn't think too much about it and tested my blood sugar. OUCH!!! I rotate my testing sites and if I happen to prick a spot that I haven't done in a while without turning the dial down on my lancet, it really hurts! I looked at my finger and realized that I pricked a spot I use often and it should not have hurt. I checked the dial. I keep it on 2 and Lucas had turned it up to 9!!!! OH MY! I guess that is what I get for leaving it out!

Intimidating....

Before I get to the story I wanted to share, I wanted to give an update on my knee. I went to my doctor yesterday and the x-rays were normal. She prescribed me an anti-inflammatory/pain med and gave me a referral slip to a specialist to use only if my knee doesn't improve. It is beginning to hurt more to walk than it did at first, but still isn't too bad. So, now we wait and see.

Last night I was sitting on the couch watching tv and hubby was in the basement hanging some laundry to dry (I hang a lot of my clothes to keep them looking new longer). I kept hearing this strange noise and I thought it was a kid outside. It was nearing midnight and after I heard it a few times, I paused my show to listen more closely. I determined it was a cat and returned to watching my show.

However, the cat didn't stop and I began to worry that it was either stuck somewhere or being attacked. I decided that I was going to grab a flashlight and go take a look at what was going on. I searched around and couldn't find my flashlight, so I decided to use one of the boys'.

I'm sure it was very intimidating to see a grown woman carrying this flashlight (and no, mine isn't one of the recalled ones)....

I'm sure it was especially intimidating when I turned it on and it roared at them!! Haha!!

So, I head out with my nifty flashlight and found 2 cats. They just looked at me like I was crazy as I pointed the light at them. One of them went under a car and the other followed and they began to meow loudly again. I told them to knock it off and I didn't hear them the rest of the night. After coming back in and thinking about it, I came to the conclusion that the awful sound I was hearing was not a cat in pain, but a cat in heat. Why, oh why, does that meow have to sound so bad??

I feel like an idiot!!

Today I headed out for some me time. I haven't lost any more weight, yet somehow my clothes are falling off of me. I just can't bring myself to spend much, so I went to the thrift store on Friday. I didn't get to look long and had both boys with me. So, today I headed there again without the boys. I looked at my leisure, had some nice chats with other women shopping, and found some great deals. I got 8 shirts for about $45....all name brand, nice shirts. Three of them are Lands End polo shirts (my favorite type of shirt). I also found a bed safety rail so that I can move Lucas into a twin bed (brand new, never used) for $3. I found an ant colony unused for $4, and some other fun things. Sounds like the ideal night, right?

Well, while there, my husband called me several times telling me things we needed for the kitchen remodel. So, I headed to Home Depot when I was done shopping. As I was approaching the shopping cards, I tripped on something and took a nose dive. At first I kind of made an "oops" noise because I realized I stumbled, but I quickly realized it was more than a stumble and I wasn't going to recover. I ended up on the ground completely stretched out face only a few inches from the ground. The impact was so hard that I rocked up and forward onto my hands. It all seemed to go in slow motion. I sat up and looked around and at the same time heard a woman gasp and head towards me. I literally had a "what the h*ll just happened" moment. As I looked around, I was trying to see what tripped me up. All I could see was a rock, which I think I stepped on. I got up and the woman who was heading towards me asked if I was alright. I think once she realized I didn't faint or something, she stopped coming towards me. I assured her I was alright, only I wasn't sure if I was. She asked again and I said I scraped my knees up, but I'm alright. She said something about hurting my pride. I'll admit that I was a bit embarrassed, but more so I was just trying to figure out what happened. I should have headed to my van and said forget it, but I got my cart and headed in to do my shopping.

I got inside and that is when I felt the burning in my knee. I thought I was bleeding and headed to the bathroom. There was no blood, but my knee was a lovely shade of red/purple. My right hand and knee took the brunt of the fall and are scrapped up worse than my left hand/knee. I cleaned myself up and headed out to do my shopping. I finished up and made it out to the van. As I bent my leg to get into the van, I realized that I hurt my knee worse than I thought. I drove home and once I was home, the tears started to flow as I told my husband what happened.

I'll be keeping an eye on it. I'm hoping to be able to hold off on going to the doc until Monday. I just hate to spend $100 to go to the ER. My knee is numb in some places. Not completely numb...I can feel myself touching it, but it feels very weird. It is pretty swollen, too. I'm sure tomorrow it will only be worse. I've taken some Motrin and hoping that helps. My right hand is scraped and has a bruise that showed up almost immediately. I just feel like an idiot. I'm sure I looked like one, too.

Learning Experience....

I must say that t-ball is certainly a learning experience....for both Logan and myself! I have learned that Logan is a pretty typical 6 year old boy. I've been around kids before, but never a bunch of little boys all at once. I was really struggling with Logan's behavior lately and thought that I was failing as a mom. However, since starting t-ball, I have learned that he really isn't as bad as I thought he was.

For Logan, he is learning what a team is. He is learning that he has to listen and that if he doesn't, there will be consequences. Of course we discipline Logan, but I think he was under the impression that since we weren't out on the field with him during the games, he could do as he wishes. I have noticed that he has a hard time listening, but at the last game it was really bad. So much so that I had his coach put another little boy on first base to replace Logan and I pulled Logan off the field (I'm team mom and I'm in the dugout at this point). I had warned him already that if he didn't listen to his coaches that he would sit on the bench rather than play the game. Boy, he wasn't happy when I followed through with that. I was really afraid he was going to get hit in the head with the ball because he wouldn't even pay attention when the kids were up to bat or when a ball was being thrown to him!

To add to being pulled off the field, I am having him write letters to all FIVE of his coaches apologizing for his behavior. Working on handwriting with Logan is like pulling teeth. Truly, it might be just as much of a punishment for me....LOL! Logan is actually working on his second letter while I type this. After he finished up the first letter and I told him he had 4 to go, he said, "Can't I just send out an e-mail to all of them?". Oh my!! Um, NO!!

When I told Logan that he would be writing letters to all of his coaches, he acted as if it was no big deal. Then I told him he had to write 5 and he told me that he knows that I will "just forget anyway". Ha...no such luck mister! When I pulled out the paper and pencil and told him why, he said, "What? I thought you had forgotten. That was like a week ago!". I knew that having him write these letters would be a struggle, but I'm hoping it will make him think twice about his poor behavior on the field. I guess tomorrow will tell!

Here are some more pictures from our games.

The boys are certainly eager to get their hands on the ball, as seen here

My Mother's Day gift...

My mother in law called on Saturday and she asked if there was anything special planned for Mother's Day. I told her there was not, but it was looking like I would have a sink, dishwasher, and stove installed! She said that was a pretty nice present, and I couldn't agree more.

You know, I never realized how much I love having a kitchen sink. Yes, I missed the dishwasher and the stove, but I missed the sink the most. It didn't take me too long to realize that after bending over to wash dishes in dish pans in the tub. You see, I could cook just fine in the electric skillet and crock pot, but I dreaded having to tote the dirty dishes up 2 flights of stairs to bend over a tub and wash them. I bought plastic cups and utensils and paper plates to cut down on what I had to wash, but there were still a few dishes to wash. I decided that having a dishwasher is very nice, but to just have a kitchen sink to rinse dishes off and stand rather than bend to wash dishes is a MUST HAVE!!

So, my sweet husband stayed up into the wee hours of the morning to get my sink, dishwasher and stove installed. I'm very happy to report that I now have a functional kitchen. I think we've finally got the hard part behind us and it should be down hill now! We still have a little more wall to paint and then we just have to sand, prime, paint, and hang the rest of the cabinets. Oh, we do have to cut counter top for one more section, but now that we've done it once, we know how and it won't be too hard.

Here are a few pictures of where we are now. I know they don't look too much different than the last ones, but our sink is in and everything is hooked up and working with no leaks!

We also still have to put some end pieces on the counter top that will hide the little gaps between them and the wall. Even though the counter tops were cut straight, there is nothing square in this house. We gave up on trying to make things fit in perfectly and just bought end splashes (just like back splashes, but on the ends). All in all, I'm very happy with how it is coming along. I haven't added up our out of pocket yet, but I think it isn't too bad considering all that has been done in there.

Embarrassing....

I'm starting to feel totally overwhelmed by the state that my house is in. With the kitchen torn apart, there are bits of things that don't belong in nearly every room in my house. I have no motivation to clean the house, because even if I clean the living room, bedrooms, and bathrooms, the house STILL isn't clean. Really, they all desperately need to be cleaned, but I just don't have it in me to clean them and then sit down to them still looking messy.

However, the pantry was in such bad shape that you couldn't even get into it. Everything that normally goes under my kitchen sink is now in my pantry in 2 trash bags. So, I decided that I would at least tackle that today (since we sprayed cleaner on the floor to remove the adhesive from the previous linoleum and have to wait on that before we can proceed in the kitchen).

I didn't stop once I got the things on the floor organized. I moved on to the shelves. Oh my....this is the embarrassing part. You see, I have this slight need to stock up when I see a sale. Only thing is, I'll buy it just because it is a good deal and have intentions of using, but never do. So, today I purged my pantry of all the things that we weren't using up (had opened and used part of but still had some left), all the things that were expired, etc.. Wanna guess how much I had in there? Yeah....embarrassing....a whole 40 GALLON contractor bag FULL!!

I vowed to hubby that once my kitchen is put back together, I will do my best to stop that habit. I'm also bad about buying tons of various snacks and I've really started cutting back on that. The amount of junk I used to let my boys eat is embarrassing and I'm working on that, too. I still have a lot of stuff because I can't bring myself to throw it all out (suckers and hard candy that I only allow occasionally), but it is major progress.

In memory of Stephen Mayhle....

On Saturday, April 4th, 2009, Stephen Mayhle and 2 other officers were killed while on duty. Stephen is the BIL of one of my friends. Stephen was a husband and father to 2 absolutely adorable little girls. These girls are very close in age to my boys. Can you even begin to imagine?

This family has been on my mind ever since I found out about this. It has consumed me, really. Today while picking out clothes for Lucas, I chose a shirt that made me think of this family.

Shandra, Brooklynn, and Jennifer: I am praying for you daily.

Julie, Byron, Kenton, Vincent, Kendra, and Alyssa: I am praying for you all as well.

There truly are no words.....all I can think to do is pray.

I blame you....

The past couple of days, I've helped my friend, Christi, with her blog a little bit....mostly where to insert code, she did the design herself.

All the coding talk got me itching to update my own blog. It may stay like this for a little while or it may change. Just thought I'd let you know in case you stumble upon it in the middle of me changing something.

Christi, I blame you!

Injured on the job....

Last Friday I was vacuuming in the basement. Everything was going great until I noticed a little something that the vacuum wasn't picking up. I was going to do the same routine....you know the one! Pick up the said item and toss it back on the floor and run the vacuum over it again in hopes it picks it up this time. Well, it seems my vacuum had something different in mind.

I have a Kirby...actually we have 2. We purchased our new, shiny Sentria to replace our Generation 5 that is a few years old. Hmmm. Let me think. We bought the Generation 5 back in 98, maybe early 99. Hubby was actually selling them door to door and we decided to purchase from him...LOL! Anyway, when a young man showed up at my house almost a year ago with a can of air freshener in his hand and a van lingering around, I laughed and asked him if he sold Kirbys. Why, yes he did. He and I talked for a little bit, but I told him that my husband wasn't home and there was no way I'd be purchasing one since we already had one. He came back later and I wasn't home, but hubby was. Now, our Generation 5 still worked alright, but Sentria lured us in. She was shiny and new!! In reality, I think hubby just didn't have the heart to say no since he has been in the guys shoes before. So, the plan was that we would clean up the Generation 5 and sell it for a couple hundred. Well, living in a 3 level townhouse, I decided it might be nice to have a couple of vacuums. So, Sentria lives on the main level of the house and Generation 5 never leaves the basement.

Okay....back to last Friday....I was using Generation 5 and bent over to pick up the stray piece of lint/fuzz (or something??). I still had my hand on the handle, but let go for some reason while still bent over. If you have a Kirby, then you know what happens when you have the handle pulled back and let go. It pops back up to the upright position. Only problem is that my head was in the way. WHACK!!! The handle smacked me right on my temple! Ouch! What is worse is that I actually got a bruise from it! I think Generation 5 was a little upset at me for trying to force him to pick up that stray lint. At least it wasn't my sweet Sentria!!

I'm slow....

I was sick on Christmas eve and still not feeling 100% on Christmas day. We all stayed in pajamas all day. Well, I finally showered and got dressed around 9PM when I went to CVS for some medicine. Anyway, I had not done Christmas pictures in front of the tree yet so our tree has been left up waiting for the pictures to be taken. I finally got around to doing them yesterday. Man! I don't know why I forget how hard it is to get a good picture of my two boys together. I did finally manage one decent picture, but not before I got a few new grey hairs.....and yes, I really do have grey hairs. Anyway, here is one that I thought was too funny not to share. It truly does depict the picture taking process. Quick.....press the button, he's sitting still AND not crying/screaming.....

Firsts.....

I can not believe that my sweet little Logan will soon be 6 years old. In the state of VA, in order to start kindergarten, you have to be 5 before Sept. 30. Logan's birthday is Oct. 9th, so he missed the cut off for last year. Honestly, I was relieved by that. I have not worked since I was 4 months pregnant with him and the only time I've been away from him for more than a few hours was when I was in the hospital having Lucas. I simply wasn't ready to have him gone most of the day. I began to think about homeschooling more seriously. I had tossed the idea around in my head, but never really thought too much about it.

Now, the pressure was on. By the time I realized it was something I really thought would be best for him, I had a few months to prepare. So, I found out that because of where his birthday falls, I don't have to send him to kindergarten. Hmmm. That meant I could keep him home and school him without too much work involved (as far as reporting and all that goes). I looked into it further to find out what would happen if I wanted him in public school next year. I was informed that more than likely he would be placed in 1st grade without any problems. On top of that, because of the fact that he is not 6 before Sept. 30, I did not have to turn in a curriculum and I won't have to test him at the end of the year....truly a free year. Okay, so now it was time to get down to business. After talking to a homeschooling friend, I decided on a curriculum!! I knew I didn't HAVE to have a curriculum, but I like structure, so went with it.

So, here is to firsts.....my first year homeschooling and Logan's first year of school.

I've taken some pictures of some of the things we've done so far and I'll try to get them posted tomorrow.

Pop Rocks...

When we went grocery shopping on Sunday, my husband threw a pack of these into the cart.

I smiled, remembering eating them as a kid. Well, last night hubby opened them up and gave some to Logan. He thought it was pretty cool and said they were "dancing in my mouth". I thought that was pretty descriptive. That is certainly what it feels like. Then we put some in a cup and added a little Mt. Dew into it. Do you remember what they used to say about eating pop rocks and drinking soda? Well, it certainly was explosive!! Logan loved it.

That got me to thinking about other candies I enjoyed as a child.

When I was pretty young, I had allergic reactions to chocolate, so this is pretty much the only candy bar I got as a treat (it is white chocolate and that didn't bother me so much). What is really funny is that I got one recently because I knew I ate them so much when I was little. Guess what? They aren't as good as I remember them. I only ate one bite.

Let's not forget these!

And yes, I got these

and this....LOL!

Guess what, I didn't grow up to chew tobacco or smoke it either!!

I'm sure there are plenty of other candies I had growing up, but those are a few of the ones I remember getting often. How about you? Are there any you got that aren't as easy to find now? Do share!!

I remember.....

On Sept. 11, 2001, I was asleep when the attacks happened. I was on the west coast and had worked a late shift. My MIL came and knocked on my door and told me that the Twin Towers had been crashed into. I, a bit confused and partially asleep, thought she said the stock market had crashed. With her still in the room, I turned on the tv and we saw the horrible images.

I was off from work that day. My husband was on a one year tour in Korea. That very day I was going to be purchasing tickets to fly to Korea for a visit in October. I was very excited about it. My boss called me and asked if I'd still be going. I guessed I wouldn't, but I could not get through to my husband. I did not get to talk to him for several days. He was at Camp Humphreys and it was on lock down. I ended up not going because he would not have been able to leave the post and I could not stay on it. I remember that I sat in front of the tv for the rest of the day in disbelief (as many others did). Do you remember where you were?

AWOL on Menu Plan Monday.....

It has been a while since I've participated in Menu Plan Monday. I've still made a plan and mostly followed it, I just haven't been posting it here. Actually, until the last few days, I hadn't been doing much of any posting here. Things seem to be getting back into a routine, so I'm trying to get back to posting!

In case you are curious, I'm down 16 pounds on this diet in the 9 weeks I've been on it.....I've ventured off course for a couple of weeks (eating right some days, but not on others...and not eating my snacks like I should), but I'm back to it!! I didn't gain during that time, so I am happy about that. Edited to say---today was weigh in day so when I got up I weighed and am down another 1.5 pounds, for a total of 17.5!!
